The Antares 44 has been known for over two decades as the world’s finest blue-water cruising catamaran. It’s been meticulously built and improved over the years based on extensive worldwide testing and the feedback of the now 72 dedicated hull owners. In 2022, the Argentinian yacht builder, 40 Grados Sur, changed the game again when it launched its eco-friendly 44 Hybrid cruising yacht – designed from the ground up to be capable of off-grid sailing for months. This perfect balance of style, safety, comfort, and electrification has quickly become Antares’ most popular version, and the next available delivery date is three years out – in 2027. For those ready for the future now, there is Ripple – a less than one-year-old 44 Hybrid available in Merritt, North Carolina.
Ripple was completed in October 2023, and she’s gorgeous and tremendously well-outfitted. The owners spared no expense on her factory-installed options and upgrades, such as the modern, lighter-colored wood interior, innovative aft cabin twin bed design, second and third fridge/freezer drawers, hand-made teak cockpit dining table, custom helm with dual 12-inch B&G chart plotters and forward sonar, back-up autopilot system, Maxwell 48v windlass with handheld chain counter, self-tacking jib, Highfield CL360 dinghy with 30hp electric start Tohatsu outboard, and more in the many options listed below.
Ripple’s new owners will also appreciate that she’s been extensively tested and optimized and is just through her new-owner shakedown period. All the systems were fully commissioned in Argentina and underwent extensive sea trials (~8,000 nautical miles from Argentina to North Carolina from October 2023 to June 2024). The owner and builder have spared no expense to dial in every opportunity, and Ripple is prepared to sail confidently anywhere in the world.
The ground-breaking Antares 44 Hybrid works with a parallel electric/diesel hybrid, a fully integrated solar array on the cabin top, and hydro-regeneration while sailing. The design offers many energy production and propulsion options, given its innovation and flexibility.
For energy, the parallel electric/diesel hybrid engines, 40kW Victron LiFePO4 Lithium battery, dual Victron inverter, and 1,800 watts of integrated solar (built into the cockpit roof) power all the boat’s electric systems without any need for a generator or its extra weight. If more regeneration is necessary than the available solar, the electric motors/generators serve a dual purpose. With the Yanmars at ~1,400 rpm, the liquid-cooled, brushless electric motors/generators can take the batteries from 30% to 90% in about two hours. There’s also the option of regeneration of ~640 watts per hour at 7 knots SOG. When it does come time to return to land, Ripple is internally wired to support US and European standard grid power and can connect to any marina worldwide.
The 44 Hybrid has the option of full diesel, full electric, or both for propulsion. The Yanmar 40-hp diesel engines are proven and highly dependable in all conditions, with a cruising speed of about 5.5 knots with one engine and 7.0 knots with two. The Hybrid Marine electric motors deliver instant torque for maneuvering and silent, fume-free motoring at up to 7 knots for about 2-3 hours at 70% DoD. And finally, there’s the dual option of using one diesel engine and one electric engine, which does not drain the house bank a bit and uses half the fuel.
Equally impressive, the parallel electric/diesel hybrid system is easy to service thanks to the electric motors/generators sitting atop and in front of Yanmar engines. They are also connected to the driveshaft after the gearbox, so any failure would not disable the Yanmar engines.
In 2020, the Antares 44 cockpit was entirely redesigned by increasing the overall and covered space, integrating more solar into the bimini roof, and creating more modern and comfortable seating areas throughout – without compromising the excellent helm position or the ability to manage all lines in the cockpit easily. The Antares 44 Hybrid and Ripple incorporate these beautiful changes.

Construction
The hull and deck are made of Isophthalic acid resin and tri-axial knitted fiberglass fabric. The exterior layer is 100% vinylester, while the interior layer is polyester. Corecell foam is used for coring above the waterline, except for hardware attachment points. All coring is vacuum infused to ensure complete adhesion. Below the waterline, the hulls are solid fiberglass. Two forward watertight compartments are inside each bow locker, and four watertight bulkheads – two forward and two aft. The standard fin keels have a sacrificial section to sustain substantial damage without affecting hull integrity.
Accomodations
Exceptional craftsmanship and industry-leading fit-and-finish are evident throughout, with foam core furniture, superior joinery, and top-of-the-line fixtures.

Engine/Mechanical
Engine Overview
The 44 Hybrid’s groundbreaking propulsion utilizes an external parallel hybrid system engineered in the UK and has proven successful in the marine industry for over fifteen years.
- Hybrid Marine 40 HP Yanmar Parallel hybrid system, shaft drive (1.25” – 3.18cm shafts) located midships in a sound-shielded compartment
- Each electric motor generates 6kW of power, providing a total charging capability of 12kW. This setup allows the 40kW Victron Lithium battery bank to be recharged in 2-3 hours. In comparison, most alternators output about 1.5kW individually or 3kW when both engines are running. The hybrid marine system allows for a 400% faster recharge than alternators.
- 640 watts of regeneration while sailing at 7kts
- An optional remote control controls both electric motors anywhere on the boat, which is particularly useful while deploying and retrieving the anchor
- Engine room blowers take heat from the engine rooms
- Full engine instrumentation panel includes push-button engine start and integrated gauges for engine temperature, water temperature, oil pressure, and tachometer/hour meter
- Dual Racor fuel filters – inline, vacuum gauges on top of the filter; each engine
- Twin 90-gallon aluminum diesel fuel tanks mounted mid-ship below the water line with two fuel deck inlets located at mid-ship
- Fuel transfer pump with piping to pump fuel between the fuel tanks
- Digital fuel level gauges located at the helm
- Spares kit, including filters, impellers, belts, etc.
- Hydralign feathering props
Climate Control
The entire interior is climate-controlled by three separate DC systems. Each has its own water pump and controller and uses circulating seawater to provide cooling, heating, and dehumidification modes to the interior space.
- Upgraded 7,000 BTU Mabru DC unit location under the primary cabin bed
- Upgraded 7,000 BTU Mabru DC unit located in the aft guest cabin
- 17,000 BTU Mabru 230v unit located in the salon provides climate control to the salon, galley, and port forward cabin

We’re The McLeans from Bend, Oregon, the original owners of Ripple. We spent eleven months in Argentina working with 40 Grados Sur on her every detail, and we set sail in October 2023. Our mission is to learn about and give back to new cultures, become better global citizens, and strengthen our already tight bonds. Over the last nine months, we’ve done that and more, and our lifestyle and kids have made it clear we will prefer a larger catamaran and some time on land each year. Therefore, we’re selling Ripple to make it all possible. It’s a terribly difficult decision, but when you’re following your dreams, there are a few of those. Ripple is like no other, and her new owners will undoubtedly be able to follow their dreams as well.
